Sight Concern Worcestershire is looking for people to take part in their SocialEyes Volunteer programme.

Bromsgrove and Droitwich Area

A lady in her 80’s in Bromsgrove would appreciate company and help with her food shopping.

Activity: Support would be needed to go to the shops once per fortnight which would include accessing the shops either by car or by taxi. Help would also be needed with reading product labels and locating items in the shop.

Other Interests: She used to like knitting. She enjoys dance-related and historic TV programmes and keeps up with the current news.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She would really welcome having somebody to get out and about with. She says, “A SocialEyes Volunteer would provide me with a bit of company, and it would be a luxury if I’m taken out.”

A young woman in her 30’s in Bromsgrove would like a shopping and dog-walking companion.

Activity: Visits would entail tea and a chat. This could be once a fortnight, for as long as both would like. The time of the visits can be arranged to suit both parties.

Other Interests: She enjoys watching soaps, such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale, as well as crime dramas like Poirot and Midsummer Murders.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It would be very nice, as I don’t see many people.”

A lady in her 80’s in Bromsgrove would like somebody to visit her for companionship.

Activity: She would like somebody to help build her confidence in walking and getting out and about again. She loves gardening so would enjoy trips to the garden centre for coffee, company and a walk around. Once a week for an hour or two would be great.

Other Interests: As well as gardening, this lady enjoys stories (especially about the countryside) and gets the Talking Newspaper and books from the library.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  Her son says, “She’d be able to get her confidence back with walking and she loves company so being able to talk to different people talking about different things, such as family, local issues, nature etc., would make a really big difference to her.”

A lady in her 80’s in Bromsgrove needs help reading her post and would like to go on outings.

Activity: She needs somebody to help her to read her post and would also appreciate it if they could take her out to the odd coffee shop or garden centre. She would like somebody to visit every fortnight to start with, for 1-2 hours depending on whether they stayed in or went out.

Other Interests: She used to enjoy gardening and still likes visiting garden centres.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “Having someone visit would be great as they could help read post, that sort of thing. I would be so grateful. It would give me something to look forward to.”

A lady in her 90’s in Rubery would like company and help with reading.

Activity: She would be grateful of company and a chat, and perhaps help with reading the occasional letter or food labels. She would like to start by meeting just once every three weeks or so for no more than a couple of hours

Other Interests: She enjoys listening to the radio but her sight loss and mobility mean that she can’t see to read and can’t get about very well.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It would be something to look forward to.”

Evesham and Pershore Area

No SocialEyes Volunteer opportunities in this area at the moment.

Malvern Area

A lady in her 90’s in Malvern would appreciate help with her post and to go shopping.

Activity: She would like somebody to visit to help her with her post and general things around the house for an hour or so once a fortnight. She would also like to go out shopping sometimes.

Other Interests: She used to play bridge and liked walking. She loves the countryside and flowers and prefers the country to the city!

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It would be lovely to have someone to take me shopping, and also help with the papers that have piled up in my home. They could also help with doctor’s appointments and can say where the letters come from”.”

Redditch Area

A lady in her 80’s in Redditch would like to go swimming.

Activity: She would like to swim for about half an hour on a weekly basis. She is confident in the water but hasn’t swum for about ten years and needs someone to accompany her due to her sight loss. She feels this would really help her to build up her fitness again.

Other Interests: She likes dancing and gardening and used to have an allotment.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It’s something I’ve always liked, and it would be something to get me out of the house a bit more because I can’t go out of the house on my own anymore. I may be 80 but I’m very active!”

A lady in her 90’s in Redditch would like someone to visit her.

Activity: She would appreciate somebody coming to visit for a cup of tea and a chat, once a week for an hour or so. She would particularly like somebody who she can chat to about things local to Redditch!

Other Interests: She plays bingo twice a week and used to knit and crochet.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It would be nice to chat to someone from Redditch as I am always on my own.”

Worcester Area

No SocialEyes Volunteer opportunities in this area at the moment.

Wyre Forest Area

A lady in her 90’s in Stourport would like company.

Activity: She would like somebody to visit once a week for a couple of hours. She would appreciate a bit of company and maybe to go out occasionally.

Other Interests: She was interested in gardening and antiques, but as her sight is poor, she can’t do so much now.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She would love to be able go to garden centres and into town for a little walk around the shops.

A lady in her 90’s in Kidderminster would like to get out and about.

Activity: She would like a companion to help her to get out and about for a couple of hours, whether in her local town or other places of interest. She doesn’t mind whether it’s once a fortnight or once a month.

Other Interests: She has liked reading, music and TV. She used to garden and still enjoys garden centres. She would also like to go to other places with a volunteer who could describe what is there.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  She says, “It would give me a chance to talk to someone who doesn’t know me, so I can get a different point of view from someone who can understand what I am going through”.

A gentleman in his 80’s in Stourbridge would like to for walks in the local countryside.

Activity: He would like to go for a walk in the local countryside one afternoon a week. He used to have a volunteer who he would go for a long walk down the lane with, to the pub and back, and would like to do this again.

Other Interests: This gentleman has always been very into sport. He goes swimming, has done tandem cycling for ten years through another befriending partnership and is keen to find someone to go walking with.

What difference would a SocialEyes Volunteer make?  He says, “I do get a bit lonely at times, I have carers come every morning and at night, but in between I’m on my own. I have friends who visit now and again but there are periods where I sit and listen to TV or talking books.”
