Volunteering Opportunities

We offer a wide range of volunteer roles to suit individual interests and skills. You’ll find some examples of roles below, or if you have different skills to offer, we’d love to talk to you about how you can help in a new role.

SocialEyes Volunteer Befrienders

Our SocialEyes Volunteer Befrienders provide support to people with sight loss to enable them to enjoy social and leisure activities.

Now that COVID 19 restrictions have been lifted, many people are getting back to a more normal way of life with activities resuming and the return of sports, theatre and local events. However many of our clients with sight loss or visual impairment are still feeling lonely and isolated and anxious about resuming social contact.  We urgently need volunteer befrienders to support our clients across Worcestershire – we provide sight loss awareness training over zoom and also in person.  Some people prefer a weekly telephone call and others would like a regular visitor or to go out locally, see below for our current befriending opportunities in your local area.

If you can offer just an hour a week/fortnight to support one of our clients please call us on 01905 723 245 to have an informal chat about these and other opportunities.

Technology Support Volunteer

We are looking for people to join our new volunteer Tech Team to work with our Technology Coordinator to offer short term support to our clients with sight loss or visual impairment. We know it takes time and practice to get to grips with new technology so we are looking for volunteers who are:

  • enthusiastic about gadgets and technology
  • competent using smart phones and tablets
  • confident downloading and using apps
  • familiar with using smart speakers such as echo devices
  • comfortable using windows on a computer.

Volunteers need to be patient and keen to help others and to be comfortable visiting a client at home to provide the support needed. We will train each volunteer about the accessibility options on these devices so no prior knowledge of accessibility is required.  Volunteer training and support will be provided by the Technology Coordinator. For further details please call us on 01905 723 245 or email info@sightconcern.co.uk.

Malvern Talking Newspaper

Deputy News Editor

The Malvern Talking News needs a Deputy to support the News Editor and occasionally cover the role eg during holidays. Using the online editions of the Malvern Gazette and Ledbury Reporter the News Editor selects local stories to send out to the MTN volunteer team (by email) for recording. This ideally takes place on a Thursday afternoon so the volunteer recorders can prepare and send their audio file at the weekend.

Volunteer Recorders

  • Read out news articles to be recorded for distribution to people with sight loss
  • Use your Smart Phone or Laptop to record from your own home
  • Be part of a growing team with regular Zoom support sessions.

Gardening Volunteer

Do you enjoy gardening but maybe don’t have access to your own garden? The garden at our Bradbury Centre in Worcester needs a spring tidy up and we would be really grateful if there is anyone who can help, especially now that the weather is getting better! For more details call Jo on 01905 723 245 or email info@sightconcern.co.uk

Finding Your Feet project

We are looking for volunteers who could offer short term support to people who are getting to know an area when they first move there or are adapting to new sight loss. This role is suited to anyone whether they have a visual impairment or not.

These would not be regular volunteering activities but on an ‘as and when’ basis – a busy life need not prevent you from volunteering!

For further information please call us on 01905 723 245 or email info@sightconcern.co.uk.

. Transport Volunteers

Occasionally our clients need help with travel to and from meetings, appointments and events and do not have access to any other means of transport. We would like to recruit volunteers who are willing to drive a client on these occasions.

These would not be regular volunteering activities but on an ‘as and when’ basis – a busy life need not prevent you from volunteering!
