Getting ready to vote
Election Day will be Thursday, May 6th and people not yet registered to vote have until Tuesday 20th April to get their name on the electoral roll. Electoral information in audio and large print formats is available from About My Vote at http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/accessibility/electoral_information_in_audi.aspx Once on the register there is the option of applying to vote by post or proxy as an alternative to attending a polling station.
For visually impaired people who would like to vote in person a large print ballot paper should be clearly displayed inside the polling station and a copy can be taken into the polling booth for reference (but voting must still be done using the standard version). A tactile voting device should also be available. A fact sheet on disabled persons voting rights can be downloaded from http://www.pollsapart.org.uk/docs/7331_FS%20Polls%20Apart%20factsheet.pdf
At the last general election Scope surveyed 2,000 polling stations and found 68% could be inaccessible to a disabled person. They told the Government and local authorities now have to make sure their polling stations don’t disadvantage disabled people. If you are voting at a polling station and would like to take part in the 2010 survey got to http://www.pollsapart.org.uk/pages/surveys.php after you’ve voted.
