Classes

The following classes are held at the Bradbury Centre. Many are run in conjunction with Worcester College of Technology and Workers Educational Association.

At the moment we have information technology, cookery and arts and craft classes available. These run during term time at various times throughout the week

Side Glance

Side Glance is specifically for people who have lost their central vision but have some useful peripheral/side vision - predominately people who have Macular Degeneration of some description.  The sessions are for two people and they are trained and supported on how to use their peripheral vision more effectively.  The official term is “Eccentric Viewing” so some of you may have already heard of this.  This type of training has been around for some time and for some people it has enabled them to improve their mobility or read their own correspondence more effectively.  We cannot guarantee that people will be reading novels again but it has worked in other areas of the country and had good success rates.  The Macular Disease Society is a great advocate of this and we are lucky to have a service user who has had training in “Eccentric Viewing” strategies plus uses the technique herself.  The Side Glance sessions are for two hours and are over two Thursday afternoons, usually the 1st and 2nd Thursday of the month.  If you are interested please contact us on 01905 723245 or e-mail info@sightconcern.co.uk

Back to Basics Cookery course

Back to Basics is a 7 week cookery course designed for people who have either lost their confidence in the kitchen or who are looking to brush up on their existing skills.  The sessions are held here at the Bradbury Centre in the teaching kitchen with a maximum of four students plus volunteers to assist where required.  Each week the students prepare and cook simple dishes but use a wide range of skills and techniques.  The first session starts with picking up a sharp knife and preparing vegetables.  One student was initially terrified of picking up a knife but by the end of the sixth week she was chopping vegetables with the skill and confidence of a professional with no cut fingers!!.  Previous students have said “This is an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and have some fun”  “This has improved not only my confidence in the kitchen but I can now cook for my family”.

The next session is:

Wednesday 8th June 2011 for 7 weeks. Start time 2pm.

If you are interested please contact the centre on 01905 723245 or e-mail info@sightconcern.co.uk

Audio, the spoken and written word which includes talking books, audio description, large print plus a session on useful gadgets and products which make life easier.

The sessions will run for 5 consecutive afternoons commencing

Thurs 7 April

Thurs 2  June

If you are interested in this please contact rhian@sightconcern.co.uk or telephone 01905 776536.

Information Technology

Tuesday 9:45 – 11:45 am and 12:30 – 2.30 pm

Friday 9:15 – 11:15 am and 11:45 – 1:45 pm.

This course is aimed at people with sight loss who want to learn how to use computers.  No previous experience is required as learning is tailored to the individual.  The needs of each prospective student are assessed by a teacher of the visually impaired.

Most people begin by learning to touch type and then progress to word processing, email and internet.  This includes the use of specialist software when appropriate.

Students attend one session per week.  Please note: places are limited so we operate a waiting list system.  Please contact the centre if you are interested in joining a computer class.
