Back to Basics Cookery course

Back to Basics is a 7 week cookery course designed for people who have either lost their confidence in the kitchen or who are looking to brush up on their existing skills.  The sessions are held here at the Bradbury Centre in the teaching kitchen with a maximum of four students plus volunteers to assist where required.  Each week the students prepare and cook simple dishes but use a wide range of skills and techniques.  The first session starts with picking up a sharp knife and preparing vegetables.  One student was initially terrified of picking up a knife but by the end of the sixth week she was chopping vegetables with the skill and confidence of a professional with no cut fingers!!.  Previous students have said “This is an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and have some fun”  “This has improved not only my confidence in the kitchen but I can now cook for my family”.

The next sessions are:

Wednesday 12th January 2011 for 7 consecutive Wednesdays starting at 2pm until 4pm and Wednesday 4th May for 7 consecutive weeks.

Most people begin by learning to touch type and then progress to word processing, email and internet.  This includes the use of specialist software when appropriate.

Students attend one session per week.  Please note: places are limited so we operate a waiting list system.  Please contact the centre if you are interested in joining a computer class.

Cookery

Tuesday 9:30 am – noon.
This course is for those who want to familiarise themselves with equipment and techniques suitable for people with little or no sight. Students choose the meals they wish to cook. The course is aimed at people who want to get more confident in the kitchen and learn how to make some simple meals from scratch. We teach hints and tips on how to get around a kitchen safely and how to make the most of any equipment students would already have in their kitchen.
